Sales Operations in the UK
Mazda Motor Corporation's wholly owned distributor, Mazda Motors UK Limited, started operation August 1 under James Muir, newly appointed Managing Director. Mazda Motor Corporation established Mazda Motors UK Limited (Mazda UK) on May 31, 2001. The new company's capital is 4 million pounds (approximately 7 oku yen).
Mazda took over the distribution business in the UK from Mazda Cars (UK) Limited (MCL Group), a company owned 60 percent by Itochu Corporation and 40 percent by Inchcape plc. Mazda reached agreement in the spring to take over Mazda business. Through a combination of investments in the distribution network, products, and marketing actions, Mazda UK expects to develop the brand significantly and grow volume substantially over the next five years. The new company will also reduce costs and improve efficiency through maximizing synergies with other Mazda operations.
Mazda plans to reinforce distribution networks in major markets as part of its Millennium Plan which defines the company's strategy for growth through 2004. In the European market, Mazda's strategy is to take control of distribution in those markets where direct manufacturer involvement maximizes growth opportunities.
Mazda's wholly owned sales companies in Spain and Italy began operation in 2000. Mazda acquired the distribution business in France from Inchcape plc in April 2001 and has been the distributor in Portugal since 1995. It has successfully operated a distributor in Germany, Europe's largest market, for many years.
Mazda's objective in the Millennium Plan for Europe is to have more than 70% of the sales under Mazda's direct control by the end of 2001.
Mark Fields, President of Mazda Motor Corporation said," With the successful execution of the direct control initiatives in Europe, we will come very close to achieving more than 70% direct control target by the end of 2001. Our operations in Europe have made another strong stride to achieve our Millennium Plan objectives."

Committed Credit Facilities
On July 25, Mazda Motor Corporation established Committed Credit Facilities of 1,000 oku yen with 27 of its key banks. The facilities were arranged by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. Sumitomo Trust and IBJ served as co-arrangers.
At the present time, Mazda has no plans to use these new facilities. The purpose of these facilities is to provide Mazda with greater funding flexibility, incremental funding capacity, and an improved liquidity position in the future. If Mazda chooses to use these new facilities, they most likely would be used to refinance existing debt from other sources.
Mazda President Mark Fields commented: "These new Committed Credit Facilities are another step in our ongoing initiatives to strengthen the financial structure of Mazda. As a result of the Facilities, Mazda will have a stronger balance sheet and be in a more stable financial condition by having access to a large amount of readily available funds at agreed upon terms and conditions.
We have reduced Mazda's group net debt by over 50% since FY1995 at comparable consolidation accounting standards. We intend to reduce it further in the current fiscal year in line with the forecast we issued last May."

- The configuration of the front seats and the second row of seats has been modified to make them more comfortable.
- The driver' s side power window control has a "quick refresh" mode that lowers the window 3 centimeters with a single touch of a button to let fresh air in.

- A "rear entertainment pack," including a DVD player with built-in rear video monitor, six speakers, rear AV jacks, rear 100 V power supply, and easy-clean seats, is available as an option on the G model (A similar rear entertainment pack is available as an option on the MPV).

- All models except the C model feature, as standard safety equipment, ISO-Fix compliant child seat securing mechanisms that reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by improper mounting, and an anchor for a top tether belt to prevent the child seat from dipping forward in the event of a head-on collision (right and left seats in the second row).

- Body rigidity has been improved in many areas and the suspension has been tuned to provide better maneuvering stability, a more comfortable ride, and further quietness. These enhancements increase stability and offer more driving pleasure.
- Comfort and convenience have been improved through the addition of a wide collapsible armrest for the driver' s seat and a power window control on the driver's side with a "quick refresh" mode that is useful for letting in fresh air.
- Safety improvements including water-repellent side mirrors, DSC (dynamic stability control) (Sport model), and ISO-Fix* compliant child seat securing mechanisms with top tether hooks as standard equipment (on all except the C model) have been made.
Monthly sales target of Premacy is 1,800 units.
* ISO-Fix is a child seat securing system conforming to standards established by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization).
Premacy has a compact body that provides enough interior room to accommodate three rows of seats and up to seven passengers.
Mazda also has made major improvements to enhance its stylishness and liveliness through modifications to the exterior and interior design and has created a more sporty feeling while retaining the best points of the original Premacy. The addition of a 2.0-liter engine version strengthens Premacy's "dynamic DNA," a common characteristic for all Mazda vehicles.
With its flexible seat arrangements and excellent driving stability, the Premacy has been well received among young families since its introduction in April 1999.
The major changes to Premacy are as follows.
- Modifications have been made to the bumpers, headlights, and rear combination lamps to create a more active styling.
- The seat upholstery and door trim fabric have been changed, for a more deluxe interior feel.
- The Sport model features a 2.0-liter engine providing more power and better responsiveness.

Mazda 787B vs RX-8 Design Model
Mazda celebrates this month the 10th anniversary of its remarkable victory at the 1991 Le Mans 24-hour endurance race.
In June 1991 Mazda became the first and only Japanese manufacturer to win the coveted Le Mans title, and the Mazda 787B became the first and only car powered by a rotary engine to win this prestigious race.
In its 1991 victory the Mazda 787B completed 4923.200 km (3,059.79 miles) at an average speed of 205.133 km/h (127.49 mph). The drivers were Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert and Volker Weidler.
Today, Mazda, the only company in the world to produce a pure rotational internal combustion engine, is developing a four-door, four-seat RX-8 sports car powered by the revolutionary next-generation RENESIS rotary engine. Mazda revealed the design model of the RX-8 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year.
Today, Mazda displays the 787B in a museum at the company's Hiroshima, Japan headquarters.

The Millennium Plan
The Millennium Plan, announced in November 2000, is designed to strengthen Mazda's business structure and its long-term competitive position through growth, based on the following elements:
- A strong brand
- New product launches
- Strengthened distribution
- Proactive actions to reform and restructure our business
- An enhanced and clear role in the Ford Motor Company group
- Developing our people to their maximum potential.
Mazda has already begun to implement the Millennium Plan. In FY2000, Mazda announced plans to begin production of its next-generation small car for Europe at a Ford plant in Valencia, Spain. The company also reduced its employment of indirect workers by more than 2,200 through an Early Retirement Special Program in March and announced that it will close its Ujina 2 assembly plant in Hiroshima by September 2001.
In FY2001, Mazda aims to improve customer satisfaction through various initiatives, assume control of distribution in selected markets in Europe, and continue to strengthen distribution in Japan and the U.S. We will begin production late in this fiscal year of the first of a new generation of products that fully embodies the Mazda brand DNA, including the first application in a Mazda vehicle of a new family of large I4 engines. We also will adjust domestic production capacity, continue to progress the development of other major product actions, prepare for the start of production in Europe in 2003, and strengthen employee development.
All members of the Mazda team are committed to delivering our business targets for FY2001 to ensure we continue to progress along a path of profitable growth as envisaged in the Millennium Plan.
Note:
- Dollar equivalents compiled at 124 yen to the dollar (Exchange rate prevailing on March 30, 2001).
- Euro equivalents compiled at 109 yen to the euro (Exchange rate prevailing on March 30, 2001).

Financial Results, Projection
Mazda Motor Corporation announced a net loss of 155.2 billion yen (US$1.3 billion, 1.4 billion euro) for FY2000 (April 1, 2000-March 31, 2001). The company also announced its financial projection for FY2001 (April 1, 2001 through March 31, 2002), reaffirming its plans to achieve consolidated net breakeven.
Mazda's consolidated revenue was 2,015.8 billion yen (US$16.3 billion, 18.5 billion euro), down 6.7% from the previous fiscal year. This decrease was primarily because of the adverse impact of a strong yen and lower sales of vehicles, parts, and components. Operating loss was 14.9 billion yen (US$120 million, 137 million euro). Ordinary loss was 29.7 billion yen (US$240 million, 272 million euro).
Consolidated cash flow was 52.2 billion yen (US$421 million, 479 million euro), reflecting management's continued focus and commitment to strengthen Mazda's financial structure. As a result, the company reduced consolidated net debt by 52.4 billion yen (US$423 million, 481 million euro), with a balance at year end of 484.6 billion yen (US$3.9 billion, 4.4 billion euro).
Non-consolidated revenue totaled 1,322.7 billion yen (US$10.7 billion, 12.1 billion euro). Operating loss was 31.3 billion yen (US$252 million, 287 million euro), and ordinary loss was 32.3 billion yen (US$260 million, 296 million euro). Net loss was 127.5 billion yen (US$1 billion, 1.2 billion euro).
Non-consolidated cash flow was a positive 5.9 billion yen (US$48 million, 54 million euro).
Financial Projection for FY2001 (Consolidated)
Mazda is committed to achieve consolidated net breakeven and a positive cash flow in FY2001, the first full year of the Millennium Plan.
In Japan, Mazda projects a slight increase in industry sales of 0.5%, to 6 million units. Overseas, a decline of 4.9% is projected for the U.S. industry and a decline of 2.4% for Europe.
Mazda forecasts an exchange rate on average of 115 yen against the U.S. dollar and 110 yen against the euro.
Under these conditions, our projection of consolidated financial results for the FY2001 is as follows:
Sales revenue: 2,140 billion yen (US$17.3 billion, 19.6 billion euro)
Operating profit: 17 billion yen (US$137 million, 156 million euro)
Ordinary profit: 2 billion yen (US$16 million, 18 million euro)
Net income: Breakeven
Cash flow: 5 billion yen (US$40 million, 46 million euro) including payouts required for the Early Retirement Special Program and funds to support an aggressive product plan

Mazdaspeed Roadster and Familia
Mazda Motor Corporation announces the release of limited edition versions of the convertible sports car "Roadster" and compact four-door sedan "Familia." Designed to offer improved driving performance, the Mazdaspeed Roadster and Mazdaspeed Familia are available today at dealerships throughout Japan.
Mazda defines "the driving pleasure of feeling at one with the vehicle" as "dynamic (driving) DNA," a common characteristic for all Mazda cars. The goal is to achieve a feeling of oneness between car and driver by providing a high level of integrated balance in basic functions such as accelerating, cornering, and stopping.
The new Mazdaspeed Roadster and Mazdaspeed Familia offer improved performance thanks to the modified specifications associated with the Mazdaspeed brand*. This further enhances fun-to-drive feeling.
The Mazdaspeed Roadster employs a damper that drivers can adjust easily among four levels to match driving conditions. It also features an exhaust manifold that provides improved exhaust efficiency and a "sporty sound" muffler for a distinctive sports car exhaust sound.
Mazda engineers equipped Mazdaspeed Familia with the 2.0-liter DOHC engine previously offered only on the S-Wagon Sport 20, and they have specially tuned on the model for improved dynamic performance. In addition, they have added large-diameter tires and a specially developed suspension system to enhance maneuvering stability. Large-diameter brake rotors deliver improved braking performance.
Finally, Mazda has equipped both limited edition models with aerodynamic parts and a distinctive exterior color scheme that features a blue body and gold wheels. The interiors also have special touches designed to add a sporty feel.
Mazda plans to produce 200 units of the limited edition Mazdaspeed Roadster, and 100 of the Mazdaspeed Familia.
* Mazda designs and develops tuning parts and accessories for the motor sports market under the Mazdaspeed brand.

Micro-mini vehicles from Suzuki
Mazda Motor Corporation (Headquarter Office: Fuchu-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture; President: Mark Fields) and Suzuki Motor Corporation (Takatsuka-cho, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture; President: Masao Toda) have confirmed that Mazda continues to have the OEM procurement for micro-mini vehicles from Suzuki.
Currently Suzuki supplies six models, including "AZ-Wagon" (Suzuki "Wagon R") to Mazda on OEM procurement. Based on this agreement, Suzuki has started developing the next OEM micro-mini models, which are fully-changed versions of currently supplied models.
The tie-up between Mazda and Suzuki began in December 1987 with the "Agreement on Production Cooperation of Micro-mini Vehicles." Suzuki began supplying micro-mini commercial vehicles on OEM procurement in May 1989 and core parts for passenger vehicles, including engines in October 1989. Mazda has been procuring all micro-mini vehicles from Suzuki since the launch of the new standard micro-mini car models in October 1998.
The total sales of the OEM procurement and models for which parts are supplied by Suzuki, are 674,000 units (registered vehicles as of the end of April, 2001). Mazda and Suzuki have reached this agreement, satisfied with the co-existence of the companies, and their healthy competitive relationship.
