Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

The FCEV is considered to be the next generation electric vehicle with an on-board electric generator consuming hydrogen as a fuel, unlike conventional electric vehicles with an on-board battery to store energy. The fuel cell emits only water as a byproduct of the electro-chemical reaction. No CO2 and NOx are emitted since the source of fuel is hydrogen, and no combustion activity is involved. Furthermore, higher efficiency in energy conversion is achieved when compared with conventional internal combustion engines since there is less heat loss.

Currently, several major automakers are developing fuel cell electric vehicles, expecting it to become one of the promising alternatives to replace gasoline-powered vehicles.

Mazda has been studying the application of hydrogen for a long time, as seen in the hydrogen rotary engine and fuel cell. On top of that, the company is developing other environment-friendly technologies such as technology to reduce CO2 emissions, alternative-fuel and clean-energy vehicles, recycling materials and resources.

Demio FCEV Eco Japan 97

Mazda Motor Corporation announced today that it has developed a fuel cell electric vehicle, the Demio FCEV. The company will exhibit the Demio FCEV at "Eco Japan '97" under the auspices of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and others, from December 5-9 in Kyoto, Japan.

Demio FCEV

The company intends to use the "Demio FCEV" as an experimental prototype to evaluate its driveability, control system and fuel efficiency. Maximum speed capability is expected to be 90km/h; the driving range is 170km per full charge of hydrogen.

The Demio FCEV uses the Mazda Demio, a small passenger car, as its base, powered by a fuel cell system which generates electricity through the electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The Demio FCEV's fuel cell system is composed of: a polymer electrolyte fuel cell stack to generate electricity; a metal hydride hydrogen storage tank to supply hydrogen into the fuel cell stack; a small air compressor to feed oxygen (air) into the fuel cell stack.

A characteristic of Mazda's fuel cell system is its compactness derived from elimination of the external air humidifier. The polymer electrolyte membrane should always contain water for its fuel cell operation. In the conventional polymer electrolyte fuel cell system, hydrogen and air are externally humidified. However, Mazda's fuel cell effectively uses water which is produced in the electro-chemical reaction process, and it eliminates the external air humidifier which normally occupies 15 percent of the volume of the fuel cell stack.

Mazda has also adopted an ultracapacitor, durable under repetitive use, which provides supplemental electricity by charging and discharging electricity required for acceleration.

James E.Miller President

Mazda Motor Corp. today announced that James E. Miller has been named president and representative director, replacing Henry D.G. Wallace.

Miller joined the company in June as executive vice president, assistant to the president and representative director. He previously was group managing director at South African Motor Corp. (SAMCOR).

Miller said the transition of the presidency will be seamless because he and Wallace have identical goals for Mazda.

"The vision for this company remains the same ---to make Mazda one of the top 10 automakers in the world in the 21st century," Miller said. "We have great human resources, research and development capabilities and manufacturing expertise. It won't be long before we return to our appropriate position."

Wallace said the time was right for him to return to the United Kingdom.

"This is strictly a personal decision," he said. "I have been away from home for the last 17 years and it is time to permanently settle down."

"When I became president I indicated to management that I would only accept the position if it were limited to 18 months," Wallace added. "This transition is not at all unexpected. In fact, it's right on schedule."Wallace will return to the United Kingdom

The outgoing president praised his successor, noting Miller's nine years of association with Mazda, through Ford Motor Co. of New Zealand and SAMCOR.

"He was very familiar with Mazda before he joined us this year and has added to that experience through his close working relationship with me," Wallace said. "I have every confidence in his ability to lead this company to its fullest potential."

Miller said no drastic changes are planned for the company and that there will be no change in the strategic relationship between Mazda and Ford.

Miller, an Indiana native, earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State University. The 51-year-old joined Ford Motor Co.'s Detroit offices in 1973 and has served in a variety of position since then, including field operations manager, executive assistant-Dealer Affairs and FOE's (Ford of Europe) director of Eastern Europe and Export Operations.

Advanced Technologies

Demio EV (to be displayed separately at the EV Association Booth)
With "Commuter in Mind" as a development concept and using the mass-produced Demio presently available on the markets as standard, Mazda has produced the Demio EV (Electric Vehicle). It is mounted with a highly efficient AC synchronized motor, while incorporating the hybrid power source system that combines a newly developed ultra- capacitor and nickel hydrogen cells. As a result, the Demio EV shows superb driving performance as a commuter.

Fuel cell system
Fuel cells generate electrical energy through a chemical reaction with oxygen. Mazda's system eliminates the moisture supplied to the fuel cell along with the oxygen (gas), thanks to the slimming down of the high-polymer membranes. Due to this advance in technology, the oxygen humidifier which previously took up about 15% of the total volume is no longer required, bringing the use of fuel cell stacks in cars closer to reality.

Direct injection gasoline engine with stratified charge
The displacement of the direct injection gasoline engine with stratified charge is 1,991 cc and it features a four-cylinder DOHC 16-valve layout. Through the use of innovations such as the lean-burn engine's cylinder internal flow control mechanism, stable stratified combustion has been realized over a wide range of driving conditions. This produces substantial improvements in fuel economy not only at normal cruising speeds but at high speeds as well. The result is an improvement in the Japanese 10•15 mode fuel economy by more than 30% and a 10% increase in maximum output, compared with conventional engines. In addition, a large-volume EGR system and the three-way catalyst of the lean- burn engine have been improved for use with fuel injection, resulting in significantly cleaner exhaust.

Direct injection diesel turbo engine
The displacement of the direct injection diesel turbo engine is 1,998 cc and it features a four-cylinder 16 valves with a turbocharger. The engine incorporates a fuel-efficient direct injection in the compact size and drastically reduces combustion noise and NOx emissions. Each cylinder has a four-valve design and center-oriented injection nozzle along with an electronic fuel injection system. These features allow the direct injection engine to maintain the high pressure air-fuel combustion of conventional direct injection engines during the main propagation period while providing the quick ignition of indirect injection engines. The maximum output and maximum torque are 100 ps/ 3,500 rpm (target) and 22.4 kg-m/ 2,000 rpm (target), respectively. In comparison with the same displacement engine, the compact direct injection diesel turbo engine improves the maximum output by 22%, the maximum torque by 21% and the fuel economy for a 60km/h constant driving by approximately 30%.
